Dawid Rozycki thought he had been chatting to an underage schoolboy over dating site Grindr in the days leading up to the illegal meeting in May.
But Newcastle Crown Court heard the 24-year-old had been duped by Dark Justice, an undercover organisation whose members set up fake social media profiles to snare adults looking for sex with children.
He pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a child after sexual grooming.
Prosecutor Kevin Wardlaw told the court Rozycki was told early in the online conversations that he was speaking to a 15-year-old child.
He added: ‘Within a short time the conversation turned sexual.’
The court heard Rozycki, formerly of Billingham, asked the boy for illicit photographs and pictures in his underwear.
Mr recorder Ben Nolan sentenced Rozycki to a community order for three years with a five year sexual harm prevention order and five years on the sex offenders register.
