A university student has avoided prison after he was found with sickening child abuse videos in a secret folder on his phone
Kenan Broadway, 19, downloaded more than 30 indecent videos showing the rape and torture of kids via microblogging site Tumblr.
Cardiff Crown Court heard that more than half of these were of the most serious kind.
After his home in Penylan , Cardiff, was raided by police, Broadway confessed to officers he had indecent on his iPhone.
During his police interview, Broadway said he was not looking for the images when he came across them on Tumblr but “could not stop” and “could not look away”.
His devices were examined by cyber crime unit in Pontypridd , who found 33 indecent videos, including 16 of the most serious Category A
When he appeared in court on Wednesday, Broadway, 19, of Ffordd Nowell in Penylan, admitted three counts of possessing indecent images of children.
In her sentencing remarks, Judge Rees said: “These children are real victims throughout the world. They often suffer horrendous abuse.
“There is huge harm involved and you contribute, in your way, by accessing these images.”
Broadway was given a two-year community order, requiring him to complete 150 hours of unpaid work and 10 days of a rehabilitation activity.
He must pay an £85 victim surcharge and £340 in costs. An order was made for the phone to be destroyed.
The defendant must register as a sex offender for five years and the case will be re-listed in a week regarding a potential Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
