‘Cruel’ South Shields woman spared jail
A twisted and sadistic woman has been spared jail after dragging and pulling the hair of a pre-school child.
Rebecca Wadey was charged with child cruelty offences after viciously attacking a two year old girl on multiple occasions.
Newcastle Crown Court heard how the 24-year-old picked the toddler up by the hair and threw the defenceless girl on the floor. She then left the child crying while laughing at her cruel actions
“On another occasion, the defendant was observed dragging the screaming child by the hair. She was interviewed on two occasions and denied the mistreatment.”
Wadey, of Gaskell Avenue, South Shields and Chopwell later pleaded guilty to reduced charges of child cruelty on the day of her trial.
Judge Robert Adams described Wadey’s behaviour as “appalling” and a “cruel act” on a number of occasions.
Judge Adams said: “You were seen on multiple occasions to pull (the child’s) hair. “
(They’re) a young child and your reaction was wholly inappropriate. “You are somebody who clearly needs help.”
Sentencing her to a 21 weeks in prison suspended for 18 months, Judge Robert Adams said: “There’s no medical evidence of any injury but your actions clearly caused the child severe pain on several occasions. This was more than one incident but does not amount to long term behaviour. But it was undoubtedly a cruel act.
Wadey was also ordered to complete a rehabilitation activity requirement as part of her sentence
