A sex attacker molested a teenage girl, leaving her frightened to go out alone.
Colin Perks apologised to the girl after he sexually assaulted her – but then acted as if nothing had happened and claimed she made it up.
He denied any wrongdoing and put her through a trial where she had to relive her ordeal.
The disgraced 49-year-old went to prison still protesting his innocence.
Prosecutor, Laurie Scott, told how the girl felt uncomfortable when Perks started touching her body.
The pervert laughed and joked, making out it was just a game, but he went on to touch her breast and private parts.
The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, tried to wriggle free but he grabbed her wrist and tightened his grip.
“She didn’t feel able to do anything about it,” Ms Scott told Teesside Crown Court on Monday.
He exposed himself to the girl and made her touch him before he stopped.
“It was almost as if he realised what he was doing,” added Ms Scott.
“He said: ‘I’m sorry. This won’t continue any further.'”
The girl confided in a friend and her mother before Perks handed himself in to police.
Perks, of Trentham Avenue, Ormesby, Middlesbrough, denied three sexual assault charges from September 30 last year.
He claimed nothing had happened and she had fabricated the allegations, but could not explain why.
A jury convicted him on all charges after a trial last month.
In a personal statement, the girl said: “What happened to me has made me frightened to go out alone.
“I worry every day about bumping into him. I worry all the time about seeing him.
“I have to close all the curtains, lock all the doors and stay in my room. I feel on edge and anxious.
“I worry that something else bad will happen.
“I don’t understand why he did what he did.”
She said she found the court process stressful and frightening: “But what upset me the most is why he put me through it when he could have just admitted what he did.
“Why did he abuse me?”
Judge Simon Bourne-Arton QC, the Recorder of Middlesbrough, told Perks: “I have no idea what possessed you to do that which you did on this night.
“You apologised to her immediately. Then you went back on that and had a trial.
“Had you continued to apologise and pleaded guilty, the sentence would have been different.”
Perks was jailed for two-and-a-half years.
He was given a restraining order not to approach the victim or enter a certain road, and will be on the sex offenders’ register, both for 10 years.
