A Birmingham surgeon who posed as a 15-year-old boy during online sex chats with a teenage girl has been jailed for two and half years.
Dr Timothy Evans, who has worked at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and specialised in the liver, encouraged the victim to reveal intimate parts of her body, Birmingham Crown Court heard.
The 39-year-old had previously been found guilty of attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity following a trial at Birmingham Crown Court.
Evans, of Druids Avenue, Rowley Regis, was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
During the trial, the doctor – who denied the offence – even claimed that another member of the university medical department must have been responsible.
Police went to his home and seized three computers In April 2016.
When they were examined it was discovered the doctor had set up a bogus Skype and email account on which he had registered his identity as that of a 15-year-old boy, the court heard.
Between September 3 and 4 September 2012 he had used Skype to engage with a girl who said she was 13 and from Norway.
The communication was principally by way of text messages and chats.
Sarah Elliott, defending, said there was no suggestion he had made any attempt to meet the children and that he had suffered trauma in his own childhood.
Rather than being pleasurable and satisfying, the work he did, which involved the retrieval of organs from teenage car crash victims, had caused him considerable difficulties and psychological problems, she told the court.
As a result, she said, he transferred to emergency surgery but the pressures had also lead him to abuse alcohol and turn to gambling.
Miss Elliott said he had been suspended from practising medicine since 2016 and went on: “He has lost his home, he has lost his marriage, he only has limited access to his children and he has lost his career.”
In passing sentence Judge Simon Drew QC said the defendant had set up the accounts “for your own sexual gratification.”
He went on: “It is clear from the contents of those messages that you and the child were able to see one another by video streaming and communicate with each other.”
The judge said during the chats the doctor had asked to see her breasts and other parts of her body.
It was likely, he said, that Evans had communicated with at least one other child, the court was told.
The judge added: “There are a number of aggravating features. First and foremost there is clear evidence of planning while there is clearly a disparity of ages between the two of you.”
The judge said Evans also made requests for the victim’s friends to take part.
Evans qualified as a doctor in 2003 and came to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 2009.
He said: “It is clear from all the evidence I have heard that you lived a very stressful and demanding life.
“As a result of those pressures you clearly began to struggle with the burden of responsibility.
“None of that provides an excuse for what then happened.”
Judge Drew said he had taken into account that Evans was of positive good character and had “contributed substantially to the benefit of society.”
