A man has been jailed for ten years for grooming and seriously sexually assaulting a “little boy” more than 30 years ago.
Stephen Jewitt, 53, denied any wrongdoing, simply claiming it was not him – but despite the passage of time, a jury took just 35 minutes to convict him of buggery and indecency with a child after a six-day trial at Hull Crown Court.
Prosecutor John Thackray had told the court the victim did not report the abuse until 2016 because his mother lived in the area and he “did not want to cause her any embarrassment”.
When he did come forward, he had forgotten the name of his abuser, but could say he was “connected to a barn where it took place” in the East Riding. He then gave a description of the attacker.
After giving police his account of what had happened, the victim, who was aged about ten at the time, looked at a Facebook page of someone who lived in the area and saw Jewitt’s name on it. “As soon as he saw it he recognised the name of his abuser,” Mr Thackray said.
After further inquiries, police set up an identity parade, and the victim was able to pick Jewitt out from it. He had not been able to identify him from the Facebook page because the picture was of such poor quality. The description he had given to police in his interview was “consistent” with Jewitt, including that his abuser had ginger hair.
When Jewitt was questioned by police, he conceded having ginger hair at the time, but said he sometimes dyed it. He also admitted having a connection to the barn.
Jewitt, of Station Road, Cranswick, near Driffield, was ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely.
