Former college lecturer found guilty of sex attack on girl

A former college lecturer accused of indecently assaulting a young girl nearly 20 years ago was today jailed for three years.
James Cartwright, 49, who formerly lived in Amlwch and Menai Bridge in Anglesey, had denied two charges of indecent assault
The jury at Caernarfon Crown Court found him guilty of one charge of indecent assault by a majority of 11-1.
He was found not guilty of a second similar charge.
The court was told the assaults only came to light recently when the girl, now a young woman, told her friends, family and the police.
Yesterday she cried in court as she told a jury she was sexually abused by the defendant when she was a child.
Cartwright, who had once lectured in IT at Coleg Menai in Holyhead and who also worked as a cleaner, was arrested at Redwing Road in Erdington in Birmingham, where he now lives.
Mark Connor, prosecuting, told the jury yesterday the defendant had told his victim before the abuse began that what he was going to subject her to a secret.
Giving evidence behind a screen yesterday, the victim, cried as she gave evidence .
After sentencing, Mr Connor said the abuse had affected her emotionally and affected her relationships. She had struggled with low self-esteem, he said, and had been on anti-depressants and suffered “night terrors.”
Pleading for a lesser sentence on behalf of Cartwright, defence barrister Dafydd Roberts said the offence was a historic one and his client had not re-offended in the same manner since.
Passing sentence, the Judge, Timothy Petts said: “This is a serious offence not only because of what you did but also her very young age at the time and the considerable effects it has had on her since. This was a serious and disgusting offence for which immediate custody is appropriate.”
Cartwright was was also ordered to sign on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely.
