As a researcher into artificial intelligence, Simon Robinson was a real computer whizz.
But when the Surrey-based leader in his field came to Bristol to work, the isolated boffin used his internet skills to download child abuse images.
Police found he had a collection of 10 million photos, Bristol Crown Court heard.
Forensic analysis of his humungous haul revealed just under 10,000 were deemed to be indecent images of children.
Robinson, 52, of Rosebank in Epsom, pleaded guilty to possessing three indecent images concerning children being abused in harm categories A, B and C.
He also admitted possessing a prohibited image, involving adults and children, as well as possessing extreme pornography involving bestiality.
Judge Mark Horton jailed him for 15 months and handed him a ten-year sexual harm prevention order giving police free access to monitor his computer use.
He told Robinson: “The children not only suffer from emotional damage caused, but the psychological effects of knowing such films and photographs remain as a permanent record of the abuse they have suffered, for others to feed their perverted desires such as you have, who viewed them in your secret, damaged, fantasy world.”
Chloe Griggs, prosecuting, said of Robinson’s 9,903 indecent images, the vast majority were deemed to be in lowest abuse Category C.
But he was found with 42 images and 20 movies in highest abuse Category A.
Police investigate up to 10,000 images per case, the court was told.
