Medic sexually assaulted 18-year-old woman being rushed to hospital by ambulance


A medical professional has been jailed after sexually assaulting an 18-year-old woman who was being taken to hospital by ambulance.

Alexander Hughes, 33, has been jailed and barred from being a medic after being found guilty of four counts of sexual assault against two victims.

He inappropriately touched an 18-year-old woman while she was being transported to hospital by ambulance in July 2014, when he was working as an emergency care assistant at South Central Ambulance Service in High Wycombe.

The defendant later messaged the woman via social media asking if she wanted to exchange inappropriate photographs of one another.

In October 2017, he sexually assaulted an 18-year-old woman in Bristol’s Motion nightclub. At the time, he was employed as a first aider at the nightclub, and was acting in this capacity at the time of the assault, neglecting to inform his employer of the police investigation into the High Wycombe incident.

Police have described Hughes as a “predatory individual who used his position as a first aider to target women while they were particularly vulnerable”.

Charges were brought against him in November 2017.

Hughes, of Oakfield in Cwmbran, Torfaen, was found guilty of four counts of sexual assault on a female, against two victims, following a trial at Aylesbury Crown Court in October.

On Friday, November 16, Hughes was sentenced to seven years in prison at the same court. He was placed on the sex offenders’ register for life, has an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and was also barred from being a medic.

The conviction came after a joint investigation between Thames Valley Police and Avon and Somerset Police.

Detective Constable Jenna Wilde, investigating officer for Thames Valley Police, said: “Hughes was in a position of trust and his actions caused tremendous distress to the victims.

“He then denied the offences and put the victims through the ordeal of a trial.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the two victims involved in this case for their bravery and support.

“Hughes will now serve a prison sentence and will never again be able to be a medic.”
