Cocaine-supplying ADHD psychiatrist further jailed for child abuse images

A Hengrove-based consultant psychiatrist has been jailed for downloading images of children being sexually abused.
And his ten-month term is to run after the conclusion of a current two-and-a-half year term he is serving for other offences.
Dr Ovais Badat worked at an adult ADHD service of Wiltshire Partnership Mental Health Service NHS Trust.
It was claimed he accessed a sordid stash of prohibited material.
The 42-year-old, of Hopewell Street in Tetbury, denied four allegations spanning from January 2012 to March 2015.
He pleaded not guilty to downloading an indecent image of a child, namely five videos and two still photos of the worst Category A abuse.
He also denied downloading a video depicting Category B abuse and an image depicting Category C.
Now he is convicted and his trial is concluded Bristol Live can report that, in October last year, Badat was jailed for supplying cocaine and making out false prescriptions to get his hands on more substances.
He was convicted of supplying cocaine, making articles for use in frauds, fraud and possessing Class B drug Ketamine.
In Badat’s latest case, Kerry Barker, prosecuting, said police searched Badat’s home and removed an iMac computer and hard-drive.
When they were forensically examined evidence of indecent images and videos of children were discovered, the court heard.
Mr Barker said the computer contained back-up for Badat’s partner’s iPad, as well as his and her iPhones.
Badat’s partner told police she had never accessed child abuse material.
Police established that Badat bought an iMac and iPad from eBay – from sellers who had supplied them with a factory re-set which wiped them of previous content.
It was found the psychiatrist had purchased a brand new hard-drive.
Badat was interviewed and denied wrongdoing. He told police he bought computers second hand and kept them in a spare room which other people had access to.
He also said his devices were not password protected. Mr Barker told the jury that due to evidence including search terms it was the prosecution’s case that it was Badat who downloaded the material.
DCI Simon Brickwood, of Avon and Somerset Police, said: “A 42-year-old man has been convicted of downloading indecent images and videos of children following a trial at Bristol Crown Court.
“Ovais Badat, of Hopewell Street in Gloucester, was found guilty of seven counts of making indecent images of children.
“Badat, a former employee with the Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust, was found to have images and videos assessed to be category A – the most serious category.
“He was previously convicted of supplying a controlled drug, fraudulently making false prescriptions, fraud and possessing ketamine following a previous trial linked with our investigation.
“Downloading indecent images or videos is an abhorrent offence. Every image or video means another vulnerable child has been abused which is why we’re committed to identifying offenders and bringing them to justice.”
A police spokesman added: “Badat was already serving a two-and-a-half-year sentence for the previous convictions. He was sentenced to 10 months for the first count of making indecent images to run consecutively, and 10 months each for the other counts to run concurrently.”
