John Boothroyd, 32, was caught by vigilante paedophile hunters after chats with someone who he thought was a 13-year-old girl.
The two-man group – called Dark Justice – then passed evidence they had compiled onto police officers who arrested Boothroyd following the uncover investigation.
He pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a child under 16 following sexual grooming, attempting to cause or incite a child into sexual activity and breach of a sexual harm prevention order.
Boothroyd was jailed for three years at Liverpool Crown Court on January 18.
