A trusted Islamic faith teacher who was thought to be “devout and deeply religious” abused a young girl.
Ubaid Rahman, 22, denied sexual assault and a charge of assault by penetration but was convicted by a jury at Grimsby Crown Court after a trial.
He was jailed for five years.
Recorder Richard Woolfall told the court that Rahman had abused the trust of the girl’s family.
“You were trusted by the family,” said Recorder Woolfall.
“You abused that trust to abuse their daughter. They had no idea what was going on.”
Rahman, of Bruce Street, Scunthorpe intimately touched the girl in a toilet after pretending to play a game with her and asking her to stand on the toilet seat.
He also touched her while she was playing on a swing.
“The parents believed you to be a devout and deeply religious person,” said Recorder Woolfall.
Rahman told “significant lies” during his trial to “cover up” what he had done.
Recorder Woolfall said: “You have felt bad, remorseful and regretful.”
Rahman had trained to be an imam in the Islamic faith.
Rahman was given an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and must register as a sex offender for life.
He will be on extended licence of one year after his release from prison.
