Child sex offender from Monmouth warned he faces jail sentence
A pervert was warned by a judge he could be facing an immediate prison sentence after he admitted committing a sex offence against a child.
Gareth Byrd, 31, of Church Street, Monmouth, pleaded guilty to sexual activity with a child when the charge was put to him at Newport Crown Court.
The offence took place between 2015 and 2016.
Byrd’s barrister Nigel Fryer asked Judge Jeremy Jenkins to adjourn sentence so that a report into his client could be carried out by the Probation Service.
The court heard that the defendant has learning difficulties and is “reliant on his mother” and sentence was fixed for August 31 so that she could attend the hearing.
Judge Jenkins told Byrd: “You have pleaded guilty to a very serious matter.
“I want to know more about you and I am going to adjourn sentence for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.”
The judge added: “The fact I am adjourning gives no indication of the sentence you could receive.
“All options are open, including immediate custody.”
Byrd was granted bail on condition he cooperates with the Probation Service.
