AN internet paedophile who downloaded more than 10,000 indecent images of children has been jailed nearly three years.
James Sheppard also had three extreme pornographic images which were labelled “grossly offensive, disgusting or otherwise of an obscene character”.
He also distributed some of the indecent images of children to other paedophiles.
Prosecutor Jason Howells told Newport Crown Court how the 53-year-old defendant possessed 864 indecent images classed at category A which depict the most serious form of child abuse.
Of these, he said, 220 were of moving images and 644 as pictures.
Sheppard, of Parrot Row, Blaina had 903 category B images of which 50 were moving and 853 still.
At category C, Mr Howells said, the defendant had 8,615 of which 48 were of moving images and 8,567 photographs.
Sheppard also admitted distributing category A, B and C images.
Judge Tom Crowther QC heard how the offences came to light after police raided his him on August 28 this year.
He admitted all the offences at Newport Crown Court.
Sheppard appeared before the judge from custody after being remanded following his appearance before the city’s magistrates court last month after indicating he would be pleading guilty.
Judge Crowther jailed Sheppard for a total of 32 months and must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
He will serve half of his prison sentence before being released from custody on licence.
Sheppard must also pay a victim surcharge.
